Scientists at the University of Queensland in Australia took advantage of this propensity to spit to test how archerfish make decisions. Cait Newport, with colleagues Guy Wallis, Shelby Temple, and Ulrike Siebeck, trained archerfish to spit a jet of water at particular images presented on a computer monitor suspended above their tanks. “Archerfish are great research subjects as they are inquisitive and generally motivated to complete tasks in exchange for food,” says Newport. “Plus, they are fast learners and so keen to spit at things, including the researcher.”

This effect is known as the Plateau–Rayleigh instability. If you look really closely, any stream of water has tiny irregularities — some bumps that are thicker, and slight necks that are thinner. Surface tension, which is the tendency of tiny water molecules to attract each other, causes these irregularities to grow. The necks shrink until they’re pinched off, and the stream breaks into distinct blobs. This Plateau-Rayleigh instability is also behind the phenomenon of ‘splashback’ during urination (now you know what to blame), and has also been exploited by inkjet printers to precisely control how ink falls on paper.

So if I learn to control splashback and add it to pancake effect, then I too will have a formidable weapon.
