I just bought a group of Lamprologus ornatipinnis in the BAP auction. I've kept multis before, and have a tank and a bunch of shells ready, but: I generally prefer my tanks without substrate. Will these guys be happy in a tank with shells but no sand? (When I look at photos of actual Tanganyika shell beds I just see shells on top of shells on top of shells and the substrate isn't visible.)

If there were enough shells in tank to go 2 to 3 layers deep that may work. It would not be natural as found in Lake but are there any tanks matching Nature.
