The first section would be for mechanical filtration, the question should I have the glass on the bottom be a few inches from the bottom of tank or sitting on the bottom of the tank? It doesn’t seem right to me that you would have the sock filter sitting in the water and then going into the biological filter.

Bio filter needs to be exposed to air and water when sump is operational.
Mechanical filtration needs to be in water path to remove any solid debris/waste.
The bio filter should not require cleaning whereas the mechanical filter may need to be removed for cleaning rarely
Lastly, evaporation can bring water level below return pump. This can lead to pump damage.
