I'm going to be building a sump system for a 125 gallon tank and want to keep the price as low as I can. Since the 125 is not drilled, I'll use dual overflow to prevent the need for a wetvac.

What I would like some help with is media and water volume

Since I'm on a budget, would like to use lava rock for the biological. Has anyone used it? Had luck? I'll run the water over some reticulated foam to catch the big stuff and try to keep the sump cleaner.

The next question is about the gallons in the sump in relationship to the tank. I'm think 30 gallon. Does water capacity matter? Is there rule of thumb?

Appreciate any thoughts or ideas

Thanks

I wrote a long reply to this question but answer was lost. Either check my older posts on sumps or call me.
