What's the best food out there that won't give my herbivores bloat ?

I use new line spectrum but this there anything lower in protein

Look for flake with spirulina. If spirulina is first on list of ingredients and protein content is 45%, that is OK.
Another option is to make your own food incorporating peas. An old standard is peas and shrimp 50/50 ground up, add liquid vitamin supplement then place mixture in agar. Freeze it. Once agar hardens cut it into chuck size for one feeding, then seal it and keep refrigerated or frozen. OK to increase percent peas.

In general Malawi mbuna are very robust and can handle many types of flake. Studies have shown that Metriaclima percent diet of zooplankton is greater than Cynotilapia zooplankton when there is an abundance of zooplankton in water column.
Do not attempt small fish or worms. They will eat these but odds of bloat go up
Never feed floating pellets.

Even sinking pellets can be harmful due to taking in too many in short time. Use sparingly.
