For the past few years, Minnesota Aquarium Society has held a mini-auction every August. And we're doing it again!

Like before, the mini-auction will be limited to 150 items (livestock only). It'll be a virtual auction, of course, and will take place a week after the August monthly meeting. To make this work, sellers will be asked to print their own labels. To maintain social distancing, buyers must pay via credit card or PayPal on Friday, August 14 and pick up their items on Saturday.

More details of the auction will be announced on https://aquarium.mn/. Auction items will be listed on the site for review and bidding. We urge all sellers to post a picture of the auction item to help buyers decide.

The auction is limited to MAS members. Click on the MEMBERS link at the top of the page to make sure your membership is current.

The auction is now open to SELLERS to register your fish/shrimp/plants. Go to https://aquarium.mn/auction and click on Add Item to get started. This auction is capped at 150 items, so we have limited each seller to 6 items to make sure everyone has a chance to sell stuff. If we fall short, you will be notified to add additional items. SELLERS: Please read the auction guidelines at https://aquarium.mn/auction/rules. We've had to make adjustments for virtual auctions, including bagging and labeling.

Photographs are recommended if you want to sell anything but the most common items. You can upload up to 3 pictures for each item. Each file is limited to 500kb. Sellers will be able to provide a detailed description and link to a site with even more detailed information on the item. Buyers won't be able to see what they're buying like a physical auction, so we recommend sellers err on the side of providing too much information.

We're off!

We're coming to the end of the virtual mini-auction. No new items can be entered into the system after 10 PM tonight (Tuesday). Bidding will end tomorrow (Wednesday) at 10 PM as well. So that will be your last chance to bid!

BUYERS will receive a list with their winning bids and total due to MAS. The plan is for BUYERS to make payment electronically via the MAS website Thursday and Friday. SELLERS will deliver their fish to the pick up location by 10 AM Saturday. A volunteer group will be there to sort all the items and have them ready for BUYERS to pick up by noon. Strict social distancing will be observed so please wear a mask and avoid crowding together.

SELLERS: Please make sure all fish and shrimp are double bagged. Plant bags should not be filled with water. Unlike the in-person auctions we had previously, the volunteers will have only a short time to sort many items and we'll not be able to handle leaking bags.

Please go to http://www.aquarium.mn/auction for more detailed information.

We had a small problem with the auction software at 5 PM, but everything is back on line. Deadline for bidding is 10 PM, so this is it! :D

To recap, the auction ended at 10 PM last night. We had 84 items listed, 18 sellers and 30 successful buyers. So it looks like the buyers really wanted stuff. Prices were comparable to in-person auctions in the past. We're now waiting for

1. the buyers to pay,
2. the sellers to deliver their sales items Saturday morning and
3. the buyers to pick up by noon Saturday.

We're not out of the woods yet, but everything so far suggests we can scale this up for a big auction in October. Feel free to share your experience, positive or negative, so the group of volunteers working on the auction can learn from it.
