The problem I have with Neons is I have Discus where the tank water is 82 degrees which is to high for them. Also most neon have been inbreed to the point of week genes( this is what I have read) where most cardinals are wild caught and even though you will lose some during aclamation most will live for a long time.

I'd have to vote for both. I've had both in different setups and they all do well. As Jimbo stated, you'll end up losing some during acclimation process.
You can always ask stores if they're wild caught or not. Assuming, but stores like Petco, Petsmart may not know.
Master automotive mechanic whenever I want to be. Lube tech is what I prefer to be.

Is there a good place to get cardinals locally? Every place I check has them for 3-4 bucks a piece which makes it expensive to set up a large group of them (I'm thinking 30+)

If you're lucky, you can catch the Petsmart $1 per fish sales. Several months ago I bought 16 cardinals from the Petsmart in Maplewood for a buck each. About 3 months ago I found neon tetras for $1 each at the Rosedale Petsmart and bought 6 of em. So far all still alive and healthy.
I love Amphilophus

The cardinals I got from PetSmart have VERY faded red streaks. :( Sad day.

I vote the GREEN neon. looks close to the cardinal and is tougher than a regular neon or cardinal. 8)

That's real cheap for Cardinal at $1ea. I've never seen them going for that price before even at Petsmart. I always see Neons at $1ea but never Cardinals. Maybe it's my luck or something :( . Lol...
