Various locations where M. aurora have been collected show different color patterns. All are M. Aurora but location morphs.
At one time many mbuna were lumped into Pseudotropheus genus. It was expected the genus would be reorganized over time. The first reorganization removed a number of species and created a new genus named “Maylandia”. However, the authors did not describe Maylandia which invalidated the name Maylandia per many experts. A short time later the name Metriaclima was published for this group of ex-Pseudotropheus species. Metriaclima was described which is the basis for including or excluding a species from the genus.
